80 more jobs at Rookery Manor : Weston Mercury; 13th March 2009
A £6MILLION development at a Somerset events venue will create 80 new jobs for people living nearby.
Bosses at Rookery Manor in Edingworth have revealed plans including a new wedding ceremony room and health centre.
Owner Ian Clapp said: "We are able to do this because the number of weddings being booked has massively increased on last year, which seems to be a common trend throughout the country.
"In the whole of 2008 we had less than 200 weddings and so far there have been 250 booked this year.
"To provide these jobs in a time when a lot of people are out of work is really good for us.
"We currently employ 80 full-time and 200 part-time staff, so we will be doubling our full-time workforce."
Some of these staff will include therapists and experts at the proposed health centre, which will be built on the western side of the site in Edingworth Road.
The planned facility, which will be open to those people already using one of the facilities at Rookery Manor, features six saunas and steam rooms, a small swimming pool for relaxation, hydro pools and treatment rooms.
Mr Clapp said: "We are hoping to make this a complete health experience so guests can have their body checked and be recommended treatments suitable to them."
As part of the development plans, the new marriage room, which will be built in between the current civil ceremony room and the gardens, will feature a minstrel gallery.
Mr Clapp is also intending to create an extra 46 hotel bedrooms by converting Rookery Manor House, as well as changing the use of three agricultural buildings for offices, a salon and garages.
To shield noise from the motorway, two earth ridges will be created with acoustic rubber on top.
If planning permission is granted by Sedgemoor District Council, work is expected to start in October and be completed by January.
